Have you been using Twitter’s search to try and find your tweets or the tweets of friends?
You know they exist but you keep receiving the message:
“No results for ……”
You’re not alone. It happened to me, and many others are having this same problem.
Twitter gives the following explanation…
“There are a few reasons why all your Tweets might not be showing at all in public search:”
- Your Tweets aren’t recent: We only index Tweets for about two weeks. If your most recent Tweet is older than that, please Tweet again and check.
- You’re a *very* new account: It can take up to 1 week for new accounts to be indexed by search.
- You aren’t showing because of current resource constraints: Right now, some users may not be seeing their Tweets because of resource constraints. This is more likely affecting you if you’re a new user (with an account less than a couple of weeks old). Our search engineers are working on this known issue, and your Tweets should start showing up in search soon! Rest assured that your followers are seeing all your updates and @replies.
Update from Twitter:
“…UPDATE: 11/02 – This issue has been unstable for a while now. Our engineers are devoting some serious time right now to fixing the problem with Find People search once and for all. We hope to have a fix early this week and a permanent solution in the next couple months. Please watch this page for updates. Thanks!” http://help.twitter.com/forums/31935/entries/60660
Is there a fix? Well, sort of…
After further investigation I found a post by another user with a partial workaround. Apparently, it doesn’t work for everyone, but it seemed to get my name and my newest posts back into the search. Let’s cross our fingers and hope it works for you!
- Login to your account.
- Click on “Settings”, then scroll to the bottom of the page where it says “Protect my tweets” and check the box to enable.
- Sign out and wait a few minutes (I waited about 5 or 10 min).
- Login again.
- Click on “Settings”, scroll down to “Protect my tweets” and uncheck the box to disable.
- Go tweet something.
- Do a Twitter search for some word in your last tweet. Chances are you won’t see it in the results right away. Stay on the results page and keep refreshing about every minute or so. If you’re lucky your last tweet will show in about 5 minutes (I think it was about 7 for me) and you’ll be listed in Find People a few minutes later!
I say this is a partial fix because unfortunately, it seems to only display the tweets you have made after following the above steps. All previous tweets will still be invisible from the search results. Bummer. Let’s hope Twitter can find a permanent solution for this soon!

Update 12/09: As of last night my tweets had stopped appearing in the search results… again… but I still appeared under Find People. Go Figure!?
